New in the Hood

Margravine Gardens, June 2017.

When I drove more my motorway cruising speed was at least 85 mph so I had to keep an eye open for jam sandwiches as they were called. (Police cars were white with a red stripe.)

Driving the length of the M4 last week I realised that now few drivers exceed 75 mph. There weren’t many police cars but a lot of cameras. There are cameras everywhere and the protection they offer, I believe, far exceeds the intrusion into my privacy. This belief has been tested by a new camera around the corner in Barons Court. Its purpose is to monitor pupils at the Sixth Form college. It is fair to say that their behaviour sometimes falls short of being exemplary.

I was given (secondhand) a pair of oak planters in 1984. They have finally started to disintergrate and I have had them removed. A trough made by Haddonstone is on order to take their place. As it is south facing I’m minded to plant a lavender hedge.

My neighbour and I have discussed either repairing or replacing the original path and have decided to enjoy its patina of age. It is about 125 years old and looks good for another 125. There are no birds in the garden, except a peripatetic pigeon, but royalty has paid a visit in the form of a Monarch butterfly (I think).

Monarch (?) in the kitchen, June 2017.

I don’t know if this is a moth or a butterfly, but it doesn’t look like a clothes eating moth and it does have a spectral beauty.
