I am genuinely interested in the practical applications of AI, for me of course.
First, a friend sent me an AI evaluation of a company we are both interested in. It was pretty good, better than the Boy Broker could have managed, even on a good day before lunch. We talked it over and a follow-up question emerged. The AI evaluation of this topic was amazing in its depth and, I think, accuracy. Going forward I will use AI to shape my decision making in financial matters, although I have tried to structure my portfolio so I don’t have to make many decisions.
Yesterday (Saturday) morning I discovered I could interact with AI by speaking to it. She uses an easy conversational tone, sounding spookily human. This morning I am in Vienna for the eagerly anticipated 70th Eurovision song competition; festspiele as Wagner would say. So I asked her the best way for me to get to Heathrow T3. As with the financial report, she was spot on recommending the Piccadilly Line from Barons Court. But I knew better. The Piccadilly Line is closed this weekend for planned maintenance. I told her and she replied courteously, “thanks for the heads up”. Why didn’t she know? I asked her again later in the day and she did not recommend the Piccadilly Line, so it seems she can learn.
My next question was narcissistic. “What is the latest blog on Blog Bellew about.” I had posted Psychobabble less than an hour previously but she had got up early, saying it was about a visit to the Freud Museum.
Later Robin asked her what to do in Vienna and she warned that accommodation was tight because of the Festspiele. I said to him it was lucky we had booked ahead and she joined the conversation saying “looks like you have that sorted”, or something like that. I am not sure I like having a three way conversation with her over breakfast but I now understand how she could be an indispensable companion to some folk. Not me obviously. What shall I call her? It’s like getting a puppy and I will train her to be more useful than Bertie but less fun. She is just soooo human. This morning she is in a strop and won’t talk to me unless I pay £16 or so a month – Rats!
AI. Incredible and ultimately dangerous. I use it a great deal for the small things that otherwise take eons to find out. And as you say one can, effectively, seed it with information.
Not to be entirely trusted and sometimes needing fact checking but pretty good.
