The Benevolent Society of St Patrick

Instituted in 1783 to assist Irish persons in need who are resident in London

Registered Charity Number: 214824.President: Lord Aylmer Patron: The Duke of Abercorn KG

My forebear, George Bryan, was a Vice-President of this elderly charity in the 1790s and I sit on the Grand Committee, as it is anachronistically called, today. I think the founders would have hoped that it would not be necessary to give a helping hand in the 21st century but it is. The Benevolent Society, through the good offices of The London Irish Centre, make small grants that nevertheless make a big difference to the recipients. Typically they disburse between £50 and £250 for essential short-term needs. You can see more on the Charity Commission website.

Not wanting to rest on our somewhat threadbare laurels the Society seeks to raise awareness and money by having an annual lecture. Last year Irish journalist Mary Kenny spoke. This year Edward Cholmondeley-Clarke, who has recently joined the Grand Committee and taken on the post of Hon Treasurer, will give a talk about Constance Mary Lloyd-Wilde, better known as the long-suffering Mrs Oscar Wilde – A Woman of Great Importance.

If you’d like to come, it is on Wednesday 17th October at the Parish Hall, St Peter’s Church, 119 Eaton Square, London SW1W 9AL at 6.15 for 7.00. Tickets are £30, including as much of Edwin Doran’s wines (or soft drinks) as you can manage. Make a cheque payable to The Benevolent Society of St Patrick and send it to me at 56 Margravine Gardens, W6 8RJ, with your and your guests’ names and an e mail address so that I can acknowledge receipt. Alternatively you are welcome to make a donation to a charity where a small amount goes a long way.
