Adrian Messenger

When I was at Castle Park one of the more agreeable aspects was watching a film once a week. I sat on a table at the back with a notebook and wrote “reviews” – a pity they are not in my archive. Two films I remember in particular: North West Frontier and The List of Adrian Messenger.

You may recall that John Huston was Master of the Galway Blazers and was nuts about hunting so The List of AM was perfect material. He was in love with Ireland and all the hunting scenes were shot in Co Wicklow and Co Dublin, you may recognise the Sugar Loaf.  In the opening credits below, if you are a bit older than me, you may also clock Powerscourt; it burnt down in 1974.  Huston plays a cameo role and his son has a more important part.

Powerscourt.

Kirk Douglas and George C Scott lead a cast augmented by Gladys Cooper, Tony Curtis, Burt Lancaster, Robert Mitchum and Frank Sinatra. It is a mystery thriller and I won’t spoil the plot or the denouement except to say that the latter is itself misleading. The film is a productive way to while away 98 minutes if you are out of the saddle after a hunting accident. It is on YouTube.
