The Dnieper is the fourth longest river in Europe, rising in Russia near Smolensk and flowing through Belarus and Ukraine to the Black Sea; a journey of 1,400 miles.
I took the picture through the bus window as we came in from the airport yesterday afternoon and that’s the only view of the river I have had as yet. I’m staying in an Ibis hotel beside the railway station.

It is a comfortable but utilitarian place to roost. No waste paper basket, empty mini bar, no kettle or armchair but there is a modern bathroom and a comfy bed. Since I took the picture yesterday there has been a sprinkling of snow.

I have learnt how to switch on the Nokia mobile I’ve been issued. Also I can send text messages and save names and numbers. It comes pre-loaded with some friends who are all called Security Adviser. My real friends will be my French and Danish LTOs and my Polish partner.
