I ignore recommendations to watch things on TV. Actually we don’t have one.
A few days ago I was urged to watch Friday Night Dinners and Utopia. I haven’t, so don’t blame me if they are in bad taste and thoroughly offensive. Wanting to keep the conversational ping-pong going I suggested Art in Isolation presented by Philip Mould. “Who’s Philip Mould?” my friend asked. I had just been to an engaging talk by PM so was on top of my subject. After his talk another friend (I have two friends) recommended A in I.
I gave it a try as each episode is only about ten minutes, available on YouTube. I wish I could remember who my second friend is but it is the tippiest-toppiest recommendation ever. There’s a clue in the title. Spoiler: these short programmes were shot on a mobile ‘phone by Philip’s son during lockdown. If you don’t get a hit from Antiques Roadshow or Fake or Fortune and need a stronger stimulant they are cultural crack you can shoot-up in ten minutes.
If you have seen Philip Mould on popular TV you might think he’s as light-weight as his whippet. That’s what you have to be to get the fee. If you need cultural medication take one episode every evening with a drink of your choice.
It’s a good recommendation. They are very good.
Another excellent series is Cocktails with the Curator, from the Frick in New York.
