Service in Prague is done with all the Gallic charm and urgency of a Parisian waiter in an empty bar. However, other aspects of life here are more appealing; food and transport are cheap and the country is beautiful.
Český Krumlov is a medieval town in Bohemia, about 2 1/2 hours south of Prague in a bus. It is set in the loop of the river Vitava , like Durham on the Wear. It was part of the Sudentenland invaded by Germany in 1938 but seems to have suffered little war damage. In the communist era it was neglected but left unchanged. Now it gets a lot of tourists, many from China. Like Venice, its tourists outnumber the residents.
For the next few days I will be taking a look around and doing some walking in the surrounding hills.
I am unfair to the Prague waiters. Their standards are the same as those in the UK forty years ago.
