Charing Cross Revisited

I took a tumble on Thursday and didn’t feel at all well yesterday. In fact I tottered into the A&E at Charing Cross Hospital in the evening to see if they could patch me up.

They administered all and more tests that one might expect: urine, blood, X-rays and a body scan in a machine like a giant Polo Mint. I was kept overnight and the upshot is that I have broken some ribs and slightly damaged my spine and lungs. The treatment is to lie low at home on a varied diet of pain killers. This will keep me out of action for some two weeks but it means that there is no excuse not to write to you daily.

The hospital staff were without exception caring, kind and courteous. The coffee at breakfast was not of the highest calibre but their porridge was good. Nursing staff were present all night and I never felt abandoned; in fact I was woken hourly to have my blood pressure checked. Nor did I see patients left on trollies in corridors because of a shortage of beds – as the papers love to depict. In short the NHS made me as comfortable as they could.

I apologise for this egocentric post but need to get it off my very sore chest. There will be plenty of time for digression in the days ahead.

  1. Please get well soon. Your posts are the highlight of my New Zealand day.
    With kindest regards,
    Rodger

  2. Very sorry to heat it; you must have had quite a fall. Given how reliable ( and early) your blog is, I had wondered if there was something wrong and clearly there was. I hope you take it appropriately easy and recover soon ( and that you have enough domestic material to keep you blogging – although you would be quite justified in taking some days off)

We too were distressed by your news and join in your other readers’ expressions of sympathy and hopes for a rapid recovery.

Have you done today’s “A Round on the Links” yet? Vanessa got the crisps and I got Spycatcher and together they gave us the link. We are still struggling with the London football team.

    1. We are all at sea over A Round On the Links. Robert got the crisps, the football team and the German philosopher. I have guessed a few others but we cannot see any link yet. I only remember the first name of Spycatcher author and we may have made some mistakes. We are not giving up and I have plenty of time to ponder.
