Gin and Gems

Next time my sister pops into The Wine House in Trim – it’s temptingly close to the cathedral – I hope she picks up a bottle or two of St Patrick’s Extra Dry Gin.

I must declare an interest. I have just bought a case of twelve of this fine moonshine. Furthermore her daughter, son-in-law and a grand-daughter lapped it up like hunt puppies when they called in to take me out to lunch on Saturday. I’ve joined the Old Folk Club when family take pity on me! I have railed against craft gins in the past. They are much too expensive and, frankly, gin is gin. Furthermore, sorry if  I’m repeating myself, it’s all about freezers. First generation freezers were chests often too big for a kitchen. Great for standing up bottles but difficult to find stuff buried stuff.

The next generation cupboard freezers with drawers are much  more practical but bottles have to be laid down. This becomes a problem with craft gins that have cork tops. They often leak but, hurrah, the St Patrick’s Extra Dry Gin has a cork that doen’t leak.

The St Patrick’s Distillery opened in 2014 at St Patrick’s Mills, Douglas, Cork. They make a wide range of products as you can see in the masthead picture. Their gin and vodka is made from potatoes and has been winning prizes; the Extra Dry Gin got a silver medal in 2018.
