Ingaret the Navigator

It’s an annoying convention that one is expected to bring a gift when going to stay with friends; a convention I often observe in the breach.

On Sunday afternoon I drove 200 miles west across the Severn to the western tip of the Brecon Beacons. This is the present I brought. A GPS 12XL Personal Navigator – “the smallest, easiest-to-use navigator for outdoor use”. Well, it was, twenty years ago. Amazingly it still connects to a dozen US military satellites although it’s a bit clunky. I used it on sailing holidays but had almost forgotten I had it.

Alan and Ingy fell upon it like children on Christmas Day, so lucky I’d splashed out on batteries (not included). We tried it out yesterday afternoon tramping across the moorland for three hours and Ingy shall henceforth be known as Ingaret the Navigator. Berry is too old to join us and was left to guard the house.
