It’s Only a Paper Moon

“Say it’s only a paper moon”, lyrics made famous by Ella Fitzgerald.

Say it’s only a paper moon
Sailing over a cardboard sea
But it wouldn’t be make-believe
If you believed in me.

Yes, it’s only a canvas sky
Hanging over a muslin tree
But it wouldn’t be make-believe
If you believed in me.

Scenery, carriages and an urn outside Chiswick House are all part of the make-believe preparations for a film shoot – rumoured to be season four of Bridgerton. What’s it all about?

“Set against the backdrop of the Regency era, the eight close-knit siblings of the noble and powerful Bridgerton family – Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory and Hyacinth – navigate London high society in search of love, surrounded by friends and rivals alike.” (Wikipedia)

I haven’t watched – should I? Is it as gripping as Downton or is it a dumbed down, bland, baby food version? One thing is for sure – the locations around London and the Home Counties should be a distracting backdrop.

Meanwhile we are watching another costume drama much of which was filmed in and around the 18th century châteaux and palaces of France: Versailles, Vaux-le-Vicomte, Palace of Fontainebleau, Lésigny, Champs and Voisins. It is Marie Antoinette, created and partly written by Deborah Davis. She is an unusual screenwriter; she has only two credits to her name: The Favourite and Marie Antoinette. Formerly she worked in the law and journalism. Although The Daily Mail panned the series as “Love Island in Versailles” the historical skeleton is accurate although the flesh is creative and imaginative. I have had to brush up my history to understand what’s going on and that’s making the programmes even more enjoyable.
