Much has been written about Chips’s lack of political judgement, moral turpitude, snobbishness, vanity and hypochondria. All I can add is he was devoid of any sense of humour.
Chips mentions the many clubs where he lunches and dines. He never mentions what he eats and seldom mentions what is served at 5 Belgrave Square or Kelvedon.
Last week I was invited to the Savile to hear Simon Heffer talk about Chips Channon’s diaries, of which he has edited two volumes with one more due in September.
It’s back. I first went with my sister and brother-in-law for a late supper circa 1980. I last went before Guys and Dolls with an investment banker (retired).
It’s part of a politician’s job to open their mouths and put their feet in it. I voted for Jeremy Hunt to lead the Conservative (and Unionist) party but I will never forget him saying his wife is Japanese on a visit there. (She is Chinese.)
