If I had a thousand bucks for every time I have been told or, more usually, read that stock-picking is a mugs’ game and a low cost tracker fund will, in the long run outperform stock picking.
Well I’m jolly glad I didn’t buy a FTSE 100 tracker twenty years ago. Since March the index has gone up to about 5900 but it is still shy of where is was twenty years ago. The companies that constitute the FTSE are cheap, in many cases with good reason, but there are signs that international investors with deep pockets are bargain hunting. If only we knew where the index will be in 2040.
Meanwhile I have been doing my Christmas shopping.
