Pravda

I wonder if Pravda would publish such an extensive and sympathetic obituary of a Russian double agent? I think not and that is what George Blake didn’t understand.

He was a principled man who truly believed that Communism was a better way of life than Capitalism. It was unfortunate that he was perfectly suited to serve in MI6 and in a position to betray so many British agents – he thought more than 400 although MI6 only owned-up to forty-two. Unlike the Cambridge spies recruited by Anthony Blunt, Blake was a man of conviction with an unblemished conscience – perhaps why he lived to be ninety-eight.

A couple of months ago I met a couple walking their two rescue dogs at Cranford Park. One of the dogs thought I looked like the Spanish farmer who had mistreated him and persistently tried to bite me in the bum. The owner was apologetic. He asked me to give his dog treats so he wouldn’t be frightened of me and this worked. I was walking with them this morning at Cranford. Bertie was playing with their dogs and scampering around in the frosty grass. A group of dogs that Bertie had played with earlier came into the field and Bertie dashed off to renew his acquaintance. He usually rolls over on his back to show he is not aggressive. This time a lurcher bit him on his abdomen. He is in the care of Medivet Kensington that operates a Bank Holiday service. We hope that his wound only needs stitches but they are exploring, under sedation, to make sure his abdomen hasn’t been punctured.  We will know his prognosis in a few hours.

Meanwhile Robert and I are missing him and he’s only been gone for two hours.

  1. Poor Bertie, and poor you and Robert. Please issue a bulletin as soon as you have news from the vet.

  2. Poor Bertie, we’re hoping he gets back home to you soon, there’s little worse than leaving them at the vets, the house always feels so empty without a beagle bumbling around.
Though Bertie has stayed true to beagle tradition, if you’re going to have an accident or be poorly do it on a Sunday or bank holiday weekend ! Have a stiff drink at the ready for the reading of the bill!

    1. Since you mention it the bill, so far, has broken quite comfortably into five figures. But as Robert says, it’s lucky we have a car and didn’t need the Medivet ambulance.

  3. Oh goodness how dreadful – really sorry to hear this. Poor Bertie and how upsetting for you & Robert. Look forward to hearing he is recovering. A bad end to a terrible year. Vets certainly know how to charge but in our experience they are generally excellent at what they do and with great compassion. Hope you have insurance. Keeping everything crossed & await to hear some good news. X

  4. What a wretched thing to happen. Poor Bertie. We wish him and you both the best of luck.

  5. Have you had more comments on Bertie’s mishap than anything else? So sorry to read about it and hope all is well
