The Irish Guards were formed on 1st April 1900 by Queen Victoria. The Colonel of the Regiment is my first royal guest blogger; thank you, Colonel Wiliam.
“Today stands as a significant milestone in the rich history of our Regiment. On this day, 120 years ago, my great-great-great-great grandmother, Queen Victoria, founded the Irish Guards in honour of the Irishmen who fought so valiantly during the Second Boer War. Since then, ‘The Micks’ have served in the vanguard of British Army combat operations worldwide, from the battlefields of Ypres, Loos, and the Somme through to the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. What unites those who have served and shared in this history is the indomitable spirit of The Micks: a steadfast resolve, grit, ingenuity and a ready ability to show humour in the face of adversity.
As our country now faces a challenge unparalleled in modern times, it is these very qualities that will help us through this crisis. All of you can be justifiably proud of the part you have played in the Regiment’s history to date.
