Spot the anomaly. Since 2002 Finistere has been Fitzroy. I highly recommend This Thing of Darkness (don’t let the title, a quote from The Tempest, put you off) about Fitzroy and Darwin – one of the best books I read last year.
But it’s not finis Finistere. Look at what I was given from Finistère.
It’s the present for the man who has everything – a tin of vintage sardines. I will never touch a sardine again without enquiring about its vintage. I must consult Jancis Robinson about which wines best accompany a 2020 sardine from Brittany; or would a snifter of Calvados be more appropriate? The trouble is the tin looks so perfect I cannot bear to open it – I will wait until it is four years old in August.
“Life is rather like a tin of sardines – we’re all of us looking for the key.” (Alan Bennett)
Thing of Darkness is a superb book. One that is long remembered.
I put A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry in the same category.
An excellent quote from Alan Bennett too.
Anomalies? Appalling spelling! Finisterre and German Bight please
Eat it. No one cares.
