To Sheffield – and Hope

My train went from St Pancras to Sheffield where I changed to a two carriage stopper to Hope.

The journey along the Hope valley in the afternoon sunshine was beautiful and the continuation on foot for a couple of miles to Castleton likewise. I stepped out of The Bull’s Head and took these pictures in the doorway.

The ruin is Peveril Castle which goes back to the Doomsday Book. It is asserted, in these parts anyway, that Peveril was the illegitimate son of William the Conqueror. Having read how fecund those Normans were in Sicily I’m prepared to go along with this.

Now, why am I here? I’m with four friends and we are going to walk south along part of the Limestone Way in the Peak District National Park. Await further news, over and out.

  1. Sorry to be a pedant but it’s either “over” or “out”, never both together; as an ex military man you would know that they are mutually exclusive!
