Charlton Heston

This was made in 1954, shot on location in Machu Picchu, stars Charlton Heston and bears more than a passing resemblance to Raiders of the Lost Ark, made about quarter of a century later.

Charlton Heston among his many screen credits – usually at the top of the bill – was in the 1994 spy comedy, True Lies, in a cameo role. The film starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and is the only film in which they both appeared. As you know Ronald Reagan and Arnie both migrated from Hollywood to politics with the Republicans. Chuck Heston started as a Democrat, opposing the Vietnam War and supporting human rights. He campaigned for Adlai Stevenson in the 1956 presidential election. He couldn’t beat the drum for JFK in 1960 because he was in Spain filming El Cid. In 1969 he was approached by the Democrats to run for the Senate. He took this seriously but decided to stick with the movies. As he got older, like so many of us, he moved to the right and became a Republican and by 1972 was rooting for Ronald Reagan. He started espousing strong views opposing political correctness He was robust and uncompromising.

”The God-fearing, law-abiding, Caucasian, middle-class Protestant—or even worse, evangelical Christian, Midwestern or Southern—or even worse, rural, apparently straight—or even worse, admitted heterosexuals, gun-owning—or even worse, NRA card-carrying, average working stiff—or even worse, male working stiff—because, not only don’t you count, you are a down-right obstacle to social progress. Your voice deserves a lower decibel level, your opinion is less enlightened, your media access is insignificant; and frankly, mister, you need to wake up, wise up, and learn a little something from your new America; and until you do, would you mind shutting up?”

(Fighting the Culture War in America, Charlton Heston speech, 1997)
This from the man who joined a picket line outside a segregated cinema in Oklahoma at the opening of El Cid.

  1. Enlightening to read about Charlton Heston’s speaking out so convincingly about the struggles ordinary humans were up against in 1997.His words carry even more weight today.Thank you.

  2. Indeed, if I may have a second bite of the cherry, the same could be said of Ronnie, who made the same journey
