Design for Living

Last month, my theatre-on-the-doorstep LAMDA put on Design for Living, a Noël Coward play I’ve never seen but I was too slow off the mark to get tickets.

The title gives me pause for thought. What’s the crossover between form and function; sculpture and good design? If you appreciate art and sculpture then your eye will be drawn to pleasing shapes. Why not enjoy picking up an aesthetically pleasing kitchen utensil? Something that you may look at more often than your pictures. The shape of a knife handle, the curvature of a saucepan, the texture of wooden bowls, the gritty functionality of a slate chopping board are all small pleasures that I appreciate.

Now I have succumbed and bought something which has more beauty than purpose but adorns the kitchen sculpture park.

Isn’t that lovely? Inspired by The Greasy Spoon I will be making cream of onion and cider soup, using white onions and crème fraîche with my new ladle for tasting – a real winter warmer with a drop of pinotage from Doran Family vineyards.

  1. Belated thank you for the plug. I love using cider in cooking. Mussels in Cider is another one, actually better than white wine, I think. Good luck with the soup, and remember, Double Cream. Single Cream splits. Original typo- I should probably change it, but I can never work out if it’s a good idea to go back in time and edit old posts?
