Levelling Up

The peregrine falcon chick has been ringed and is a falcon; if male she would be a tiercel. This morning she jumped up on the balcony wall for the first time.

Meanwhile the retail landscape at Barons Court has seen two changes. McColl’s, the newsagent that sells unhealthy sandwiches, snacks and booze, has been bought out of administration by Morrisons, the fourth largest supermarket chain in the UK. Shareholders in McColl’s have been wiped out (boo hoo). About eight or ten years ago I thought of buying their shares but fortunately refrained. Morrisons may shift the focus away from papers, magazines and snacks to fresh food. Of course there is a 24 hour mini Marks & Spencer in the filling station.

The much larger premises across the road from McColl’s has been empty since a hip coffee shop pulled out before it even opened. Prior to that it had been a branch of Paperchase and before that a corner shop. Now we welcome Gail’s Bakery. Some things, like the dratted box moth, come only too quickly to Barons Court. Gail’s started in Hampstead in the 1990s baking artisanal breads for London restaurants and, in my opinion, has taken its time coming to BC and Number 56. I expect it to be a good addition to the local offerings but if there is no increase in total spend it may just spread the butter thinner. Well it will be spread on sourdough at Number 56.

  1. Great news about a Gail’s Bakery opening up. They do a delicious sausage roll.

  2. Great picture of the peregrine falcon chick. Not the prettiest of chicks, until her plumage develops.
