Long Live Estonia

If I were Putin I’d want a quick victory to raise morale and what better target than Estonia.

Formerly part of the Soviet Union, rather tiny with a population of just 1.4 million, one of the smallest in the EU and NATO. Better still more than 20% of the population are already Russian.

Why doesn’t Estonia have international election observers?

V-Dem’s Liberal Democracy Index, 2010 -2021.

The print is much too small but all you need to know is Estonia is number six, UK nineteen and USA twenty-nine. The USA is in red indicating a move from democracy to more autocratic government. Estonians are innovative. It is where Skype and Bolt were invented. The former has folded and the latter will come to London in August.

The seat of the Parliament of Estonia in Toompea Castle, Tallinn.

Seeing former Soviet Union countries close-up on election missions poverty was apparent. Estonia’s GDP per capita is comparable to countries like Lithuania and the Czech RepublIc.

Do you think the Russians in Estonia are yearning to be part of Russia? I don’t? Over many years they have become Estonian although it’s fair to say not all of them speak Estonian. In my opinion if Putin invades they will scarper along with the Estonians and Putin will have conquered a country with a depleted population and no natural resources in contrast to Ukraine.

The barn swallow (Hirundo rustica) is the national bird of Estonia.

So if you thought Estonia is a beautiful, forested, agricultural country with more than 2,000 islands and more than 330 bird species you would be right but you would not be seeing the full picture.

  1. In fact Bolt has been operating in the London area for some years. We are regular users and think it is superior to Uber.
The Estonian swallow is very fine.

  2. Not sure I’d agree Bolt is superior to Uber but I try to use them as often as possible to keep Uber in check… Monopolies are bad for consumers.
